The Progression of Gender Roles in American Society Essay -- Gender Ro

Many people influence our view of how we should act and what we should say such as our parents, friends, and correct the media. Males and females play very different roles and these differences are apparent in our every day lives. These differences are not the same as they used to be. Society has changed the room it treats men and women over time. Around the beginning of the 20th century men and women had very specific gender roles. Women in the past were usually looked at as the homemaker types. Very few women had jobs of any type during this time period. Women usually stayed home and cared for children and cared for the home. At this time women had no voting rights either. They were practically a mans property. Men of this time period also played a different role than they do today. The males of this era made all of the money for the household. They were the ones who went to spend a penny and provided for the family. They were looked upon as the head of the family and were expected to act as such. Males were also the ones who voted, so all of the leaders around this time were elected by men. Women are as yet expected to care for the children and take care of the home, but it is more acceptable these days for a man to take a more active role in sharing those types of responsibil...

NASAs Contribution to Technological Advances on Earth Essay -- Exposi

NASAs Contribution to Technological Advances on EarthAbstractNASA is more than well(p) a space administration it shows itself everyday in the world although at first it might not be apparent. There are not many people that know the variety of what it has brought to everyday life. NASA is not limited to just aerospace technology. The three main fields of development have been medical, environmental and consumer products. Each field is equally important to technological development. NASAs space exploration is inherent for the advancement of technology on Earth. HistoryOn October 1, 1958, the National Aeronautics and quadriceps femoris Administration (NASA) was created. It was the day of beginning a rich history of strange scientific and technological achievements in human space flight, astronautics, space science, and space applications. It was formed because of the Sputnik crisis of confidence. NASA inherited the earlier National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and ear ly(a) government organizations, and immediately began working on options for human space flight (Roland, 1999). NASA was first called upon to find out if humans could survive in space in Project Mercury. This was then followed by Project Gemini, which built upon the successes of Project Mercury and used a spacecraft built for two astronauts. NASA then turned their caution to the moon in Project Apollo, which was successful in 1969 when the Apollo 11 mission first put a man on the moon. The Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz Test Projects soon followed in the early and mid-1970s. NASA then resumed their human space flights in 1981, with the blank space Shuttle program that is still continued today to help build the International Space Station (Launius &... ...ar System Exploration. Euthenasia In Australia :: essays research papers fc

Euthanasia Some successions, life can deteriorate to the point where a person loses their dignity and self-respect, and are unable to communicate life like this is longer worth living, as the most enjoyable of things are no-longer enjoyable. Euthanasia could, in my opinion, be practiced when a person reaches this point, and then only passively. If the person in question is able to communicate rationally, then their opinion must be asked first. Assisted death, other than passively should most definitely remain illegal, and in the Northern Territory, it should be made illegal. The nation of Australia must be uniformed, or else muckle simply go to another state, where the law different. People should live their lives for as long as it is worth living, as defined above. Some people wishing to use euthanasia to die when they are diagnosed with a terminal illness, and given a certain amount of time to live. These people still have those six-spot months, or whatever. If they can, they s hould enjoy that time, doing all the things they like to do. If they wanted, they could go out and spend all their savings, or retirement money on things that I al expressive styles wanted to get one, or make themselves feel good by donating to charities. They should not look at the amount of time they dont have, save instead, at the time they have left. And besides, we all know we are going to die, these people are no different, except they know exactly how much time is left. It has been said that trials and pain make us stronger. Even if someone is in pain, that pain could make them mentally stronger than if they give up and take the easy way out. Life is full of pain, and joy, everyone goes through both things in their lives, because that is what life is. Some say that doctor-aided death is widespread already, only covertly, and that the Netherlands is a model of how to establish the respectable to die by bringing the practice out in the open, where the medical and legal syste m can oversee it. This issue is similar to how abortion was seen forrader it was legalized. The main reason for legalization of abortion was because it was being done anyway. People had access to abortion, it was just being done terribly. Were in exactly the same berth today People have access to assisted suicide its just being done so badly.

Symbols and Symbolism in Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter :: Scarlet Letter essays

Symbolism in The Scarlet Letter   Nathaniel Hawthorne uses diction and symbolism to show the negative effects of stifling conformity verses the corroborative empowerment found in embarrassing ones own truth. He tries to impress upon his readers that an outsider, whether from another physical location, or simply someone who thinks and acts outside that societys definition of delicious behavior shtup in fact facilitate compulsive change within that society. The secret in this novel most likely represents an idea, privacy, or level off social censure.   The Mary-like character Hester Prynne represents feminism, as the female-heroine, and truth, as she is unwavering in her stand against the wishes of the state, church, family and community with regard to her own truth. As represented by The Scarlet Letter, Do you not think it is better for your little ones temporal and eternal welfare that she be taken out of your charge and clad soberly and disciplined string ently and instructed in the truths of heaven and earth? What can you do for the child? I can teach my little Pearl what I have learned from this, place her finger on the red token. Woman it is thy badge of take down. Nevertheless, this badge taught me...it teaches me daily lessons by reasons of which my child may be better and wiser. Prynne is aware of how her truth can set her free. Later in the novel it states ...people brought all their sorrows and perplexities, and besought her counsel. This shows how Prynnes stand for the truth has eventually affected the entire community in a very positive manner, changing its perspective on social norms.         Yet the character Dimmesdale, the co-adulterer, was said to be liken with unutterable torment. Hawthorne was showing that Dimmesdales silence about the truth and his sleep together was worse than any judgment that would have been bestowed on him by his community or maker. Later Prynee offers to s ave Dimmesdale from his jail (guilt) and jailer (Chillingworth, the devil-like character). He refuses and eventually dies of shame and guilt at the end of this romantic tale of the love between two people. Pearl, the bastard-daughter character, represents the world of nature (truth), a nature-friendly pre-Christian time in mankinds history and the scramble between the town (societal taboos) and the simpler way of forest (respect for the truth).

The Changes in Mickey and Edwards Relationship :: Blood Brothers Willy Russell Essays

The Changes in Mickey and Edwards RelationshipThere In a flash the whole course of your life has been decided, willyou succeed or will you fail? It is not for you to decide, you havehad your freedom taken away from you and you will never trueise untilthe last moments of your frustrated, or enjoyable life and by then itwill be too late. This is Blood Brothers in a nutshell a musicalwhich tears through the walls of social ethics exposing the obvioustruth, wrong and social inequalities roam our Country and thedevices which Russell uses brings this to the audience in a mixture ofspeech, song and verbalize. In this piece of drama coursework focusing on Blood Brothers in that respectwill be several different aspects of the play which will be focusedon. The characters, particularly the main two, will be the fundamentalbuilding blocks of tell the question because once we knoweverything about Mickey and Edward we can then go on to look at theirrelationship changes. Another important elec trical outlet to look at is thedramatic devices used by the director and how this will link to thestructure of the play. Also it would be useful to look at the run-inused as this can give a good insight into the author and on this note, reach into the ideas and themes of the play so we will have a goodview of Willy Russells intentions. Finally looking at the setting tosee more of Russells intentions and the cultural context trying tosee what kind of audience Russell had in mind.Looking at Russells intentions I have come up with three main viewpointsHe just wrote this play as you see it at face value it could be anironic storyline that they are blood brothers but also real brothers, the fact that its a musical is purely for show and entertainment. The evidence for this point of view is one of Russells interviewsabout Educating Rita, where Rita cuts off Franks hair its supposedto be alluding to the cutting of Sampsons hair by Delilah. In factthe real reason was it was supposed to be a c omic gag. So then how dowe know that Russell wrote the play for the general audience and notfor the commentators and critics, maybe he wrote the play to beenjoyed rather than for people to debate the social meanings but justwatch a musical? An alternative view point would advise that Russell saw this as wayto show how difficult it is to be successful or just to lead a good

‘Lady Lazarus’ by Sylvia Plath. Essay

The poem Lady Lazarus gives us an insight into the troubled demeanors of the poet Sylvia Plath. She lost her father at an early age. Supported solely by her mother she went through a very rough childhood. In fact, Sylvia Plath escaped a near fatal accident in her childhood and went on to attempt self-destruction twice in the following years of her life. In the poem, Plath lets her emotions flow and sheds demoralise on her distress. In this poem, Sylvia Plath uses final solution imagery extensively. The Holocaust, as is widely kn suffer, refers to the inhuman torture and exploitation of the Jews by the Nazis. The first remark of the gruesome Holocaust comes in the form of a comparison between herself and a Nazi lampshade. Unbelievable as it may seem, the Nazis used the skins of the Jews to make lampshades. Plath feels that she has been used in a standardised manner. Throughout her life Plath had been in and out of hospital. So much so that she felt corresponding an object on disp lay a mere, inconsequential lifetime thing on which the doctors happily carried out various experiments. The Nazis used to take away all valuable articles from the Jews, including expensive fabrics like linen. Plath refers to her skin as Jew linen, once more indicating that she was used as an object.Plath suffered a nervous breakdown in her childhood. To cure her, doctors had no choice but to use shock absorber treatment, subjecting her to unbearable pain in the process. In the poem, Plath uses the word charge which has a pun on it, referring to the brutal pain inflicted on her by the doctors. In this instance, a parallel can be drawn to the inhuman torture experienced by the Jews.In the poem, Plath refers to herself as a valuable and a pure gold baby, which is again an congresswoman of Holocaust imagery. It is widely believed that the Nazis were so cruel that they not only used the Jews to do physical work but also used their bodies to make objects like soap. Their golden teeth were plucked out and melted to make valuables such as wedding rings. Their corpses were then burnt to erase all trace of their existence. The mention of all this in the poem makes us believe that Sylvia Plath considered herself to be stifled, oppressed and exploited, just like the Jews. Finally, a striking similarity is noticed in the manner in which Plath chose to end her life and the methods used to exterminate the Jews. The Jews were killed in gas chambers where poisonous gases devoured their internal organs. Plath committed suicide by putting her laissez passer inside an oven, and died as a result of gas poisoning. In my opinion this was perhaps because she felt herself so alike the Jews that she preferred to end her life in the very same manner. Thus, we can safely conclude that Holocaust imagery forms a significant part of Sylvia Plaths poem Lady Lazarus.b)After critically analyzing the poem, the Holocaust imagery which has been used widely, seems fairly effective in conveying the poets message. It is clear from the poem that Sylvia Plath felt she has been driven to suicide by federation as a whole. Evidently, she believed that life had been too unfair to her. This feeling stems from her childhood, when she lost her father. This horrific incident left a gaping void in her life. A major part of her moral support had been cruelly snatched from her. To add to this, Plath had a pitiable medical record. She made frequent visits to the hospital throughout her life. The excruciating shock treatment she received shook her completely. Once Plath got married, her personal life suffered even more. Her husband had been unfaithful to her, further aggravating her pitiable condition. Overall, Plaths life was dispirit to say the least. Plath was consumed by self-pity throughout her life.In this regard, the Holocaust imagery used by Plath is very effective and appropriate. It reminds us of historys most wrong tale of cruelty. This justifies its use to depict Plaths life .However, in other respects, the Holocaust imagery cannot effectively portray Plaths life. An important reason being that the Jews unceasingly had the will to survive. They were members of an affluent community who were stripped off all their possessions by the Nazis. Plath on the other hand had attempted suicide twice. This is a glaring departure between Plaths life and the Holocaust, making it quite ineffective in conveying her message.Another important difference is that the Holocaust was a planned race murder which involved the death of approximately six million people. Plaths comparison seems quite irrelevant in this aspect, as she talks about the death of a single person (herself). Finally, one of the most important differences is that Plath considered death to be a performance. At the end of the poem, Plath says that she was about to rise like a phoenix, referring to her own death. To her, attaining death was like being resurrected, as she would be freed from her troubled l ife. Plath believed death to be a means of attaining victory over life. She clearly mentions that when she survived her second suicide attempt, it was a theatrical comeback. In comparison, the Holocaust was only about forcing people into giving up their lives. Thus, in my opinion, taking these factors and many more subtle differences onto consideration, the Holocaust imagery is fairly effective in conveying Plaths message.

Come and thrust your japes with steel in your hand.Tyrion looked pointedly at his expert hand. Why, I have steel in my hand, Ser Alliser, although it appears to be a crab fork. Shall we duel? He hopped up on his chair and began poking at Thornes breast with the tiny fork. Roars of laughter filled the tower room. He could only bow his head politely and say, You are too kind, Maester Aemon. The blind man smiled. He was a tiny thing, wrinkled and hairless, shrunken beneath the weight of a hundred years so his maesters collar with its links of many metals hung loose about his throat. I have been cal led many things, my lord, he said, but kind is seldom one of them. This time Tyrion himself led the laughter.Much later, when the serious business of eating was done and the others had left, Mormont offered Tyrion a chair beside the fire and a cup of mulled spirits so robust they brought tears to his eyes. The kingsroad can be perilous this far north, the Lord Commander told him as they drank.I have Jyck and Morrec, Tyrion said, and Yoren is riding south again.Yoren is only one man. The strong drink was making Tyrion light-headed, but not so drunk that he did not realize that the Old Bear wanted something from him. I hope I can repay your kindness. You can, Mormont said bluntly. Your sister sits beside the king. Your brother is a great knight, and your father the most powerful lord in the Seven Kingdoms. Speak to them for us. sort out them of our need here. You have seen for yourself, my lord. The Nights Watch is dying. Our strength is less than a thousand now. Six hundred here, cardinal hundred in the ShadowTower, even fewer at Eastwatch, and a scant third of those fighting men. The Wall is a hundred leagues long. Think on that. Should an attack co me, I have three men to have got each mile of wall.Three and a third, Tyrion said with a yawn.Mormont scarcely seemed to hear him. The old man warmed his hands before the fire. I displace Benjen Stark to search after Yohn Royces son, lost on his first ranging. The Royce boy was green as summer grass, yet he insisted on the honor of his own command, saying it was his due as a knight. I did not wish to offend his lord father, so I yielded. I send him out with two men I deemed as good as any in the Watch. More fool I.Fool, the raven agreed. Tyrion glanced up. The bird peered down at him with those beady black eyes, ruffling its wings. Fool, it called again. Doubtless old Mormont would take it amiss if he throttled the creature. A pity. The Lord Commander took no notice of the irritating bird. Gared was near as old as I am and longer on the Wall, he went on, yet it would seem he forswore himself and fled. I should n invariably have deliberated it, not of him, but Lord Eddard sent me h is head from Winterfell. Of Royce, there is no word. One deserter and two men lost, and now Ben Stark too has gone missing. He sighed deeply. Who am I to send searching after him? In two years I will be seventy. Too old and too weary for the burden I bear, yet if I set it down, who will pick it up? Alliser Thorne? Bowen Marsh? I would have to be as blind as Maester Aemon not to see what they are. The Nights Watch has become an army of sullen boys and tired old men. Apart from the men at my table tonight, I have perhaps twenty who can read, and even fewer who can think, or plan, or lead. Once the Watch washed-out its summers building, and each Lord Commander raised the Wall higher than he bring it. Now it is all we can do to stay alive. He was in deadly earnest, Tyrion realized. He felt faintly embarrassed for the old man. Lord Mormont had spent a good part of his life on the Wall, and he needed to believe if those years were to have any meaning. I promise, the king will hear of you r need, Tyrion said gravely, and I will speak to my father and my brother Jaime as well. And he would. Tyrion Lannister was as good as his word. He left the rest surd that King Robert would ignore him, Lord Tywin would ask if he had taken leave of his senses, and Jaime would only laugh. You are a young man, Tyrion, Mormont said. How many winters have you seen?He shrugged. Eight, nine. I misremember. And all of them short. As you say, my lord. He had been born in the dead of winter, a terrible cruel one that the maesters said had lasted near three years, but Tyrions early memories were of spring. When I was a boy, it was said that a long summer always meant a long winter to come. This summer has lasted nine years, Tyrion, and a tenth will soon be upon us. Think on that. When I was a boy, Tyrion replied, my wet nurse told me that one day, if men were good, the gods would give the world a summer without ending. Perhaps weve been better than we thought, and the Great Summer is finally at h and. He grinned. The Lord Commander did not seem amused. You are not fool enough to believe that, my lord. Already the days grow shorter. There can be no mistake, Aemon has had letters from the Citadel, findings in accord with his own. The end of summer stares us in the face. Mormont reached out and clutched Tyrion tightly by the hand. You must make them understand. I tell you, my lord, the darkness is coming. There are wild things in the woods, direwolves and mammoths and snow bears the size of aurochs, and I have seen darker shapes in my dreams. In your dreams, Tyrion echoed, thinking how badly he needed another strong drink.Mormont was deaf to the edge in his voice. The fisherfolk near Eastwatch have glimpsed white walkers on the shore. This time Tyrion could not hold his tongue. The fisherfolk of Lannisport often glimpse merlings.Denys Mallister writes that the mountain people are moving south, slipping past the ShadowTower in numbers greater than ever before. They are running, my lord . . . but running from what? Lord Mormont moved to the window and stared out into the night. These are old bones, Lannister, but they have never felt a chill like this. discover the king what I say, I pray you. Winter is coming, and when the Long Night falls, only the Nights Watch will stand amid the realm and the darkness that sweeps from the north. The gods help us all if we are not ready. The gods help me if I do not get some sleep tonight. Yoren is impelled to ride at first light. Tyrion got to his feet, sleepy from wine and tired of doom. I thank you for all the courtesies you have done me, Lord Mormont.Tell them, Tyrion. Tell them and make them believe. That is all the thanks I need. He whistled, and his raven flew to him and perched on his shoulder. Mormont smiled and gave the bird some corn from his pocket, and that was how Tyrion left him.It was bitter cold outside. Bundled thickly in his skins, Tyrion Lannister pulled on his gloves and nodded to the poor frozen wre tches standing sentry outside the Commanders Keep. He set off across the yard for his own chambers in the Kings Tower, walking as briskly as his legs could manage. Patches of snow crunched beneath his feet as his boots broke the nights crust, and his breath steamed before him like a banner. He shoved his hands into his armpits and walked faster, praying that Morrec had remembered to warm his lie with with hot bricks from the fire.Behind the Kings Tower, the Wall glimmered in the light of the moon, immense and mysterious. Tyrion stopped for a moment to look up at it. His legs ached of cold and haste.Suddenly a strange madness took hold of him, a yearning to look once more off the end of the world. It would be his last chance, he thought tomorrow he would ride south, and he could not imagine why he would ever want to return to this frozen desolation. The Kings Tower was before him, with its promise of love and a soft bed, yet Tyrion found himself walking past it, toward the vast pal e palisade of the Wall.A wooden stair ascended the south face, anchored on huge rough-hewn beams sunk deep into the ice and frozen in place. Back and forth it switched, clawing its way upward as crooked as a bolt of lightning. The black brothers assured him that it was much stronger than it looked, but Tyrions legs were cramping too badly for him to even contemplate the ascent. He went instead to the iron cage beside the well, clambered inside, and yanked hard on the bell rope, three quick pulls. He had to wait what seemed an eternity, standing there inside the bars with the Wall to his butt. Long enough for Tyrion to begin to wonder why he was doing this. He had just about decided to forget his emergent whim and go to bed when the cage gave a jerk and began to ascend. He moved upward slowly, by fits and starts at first, then more smoothly. The ground fell away beneath him, the cage swung, and Tyrion wrapped his hands around the iron bars. He could feel the cold of the metal even t hrough his gloves. Morrec had a fire burning in his room, he noted with approval, but the Lord Commanders tower was dark. The Old Bear had more sense than he did, it seemed. Then he was above the towers, still inching his way upward. Castle Black lay below him, etched in work. You could see how stark and empty it was from up here windowless keeps, crumbling walls, courtyards choked with broken stone. Farther off, he could see the lights of Moles Town, the little village half a league south on the kingsroad, and here and there the bright glitter of moonlight on water where icy streams descended from the mountain heights to cut across the plains. The rest of the world was a bleak emptiness of windswept hills and rocky fields spotted with snow. Finally a thick voice behind him said, Seven hells, its the dwarf, and the cage jerked to a sudden stop and hung there, swinging slowly back and forth, the ropes creaking.Bring him in, damn it. There was a grunt and a loud groaning of wood as th e cage slid sidelong and then the Wall was beneath him. Tyrion waited until the swinging had stopped before he pushed open the cage door and hopped down onto the ice. A heavy figure in black was leaning on the winch, while a second held the cage with a gloved hand. Their faces were muffled in woolen scarves so only their eyes showed, and they were plump with layers of wool and leather, black on black. And what will you be wanting, this time of night? the one by the winch asked.A last look. The men exchange sour glances. Look all you want, the other one said. Just have a care you dont fall off, little man. The Old Bear would have our hides. A small wooden shack stood under the great crane, and Tyrion saw the dull glow of a brazier and felt a brief gust of fondness when the winch men opened the door and went back inside. And then he was alone. It was bitingly cold up here, and the wind pulled at his clothes like an instant(a) lover. The top of the Wall was wider than the kingsroad of ten was, so Tyrion had no fear of falling, although the footing was slicker than he would have liked. The brothers spread crushed stone across the walkways, but the weight of countless footsteps would melt the Wall beneath, so the ice would seem to grow around the gravel, swallowing it, until the path was bare again and it was time to crush more stone.Still, it was nothing that Tyrion could not manage. He looked off to the east and west, at the Wall blossoming before him, a vast white road with no runner and no end and a dark abyss on either side. West, he decided, for no special reason, and he began to walk that way, following the pathway warm the north edge, where the gravel looked freshest. His bare cheeks were ruddy with the cold, and his legs complained more loudly with every step, but Tyrion ignored them. The wind swirled around him, gravel crunched beneath his boots, while forward the white ribbon followed the lines of the hills, rising higher and higher, until it was lost beyond the western horizon. He passed a massive catapult, as tall as a city wall, its base sunk deep into the Wall. The throwing arm had been taken off for repairs and then forgotten it lay there like a broken toy, half-embedded in the ice.On the far side of the catapult, a muffled voice called out a challenge. Who goes there? HaltTyrion stopped. If I halt too long Ill freeze in place, Jon, he said as a shaggy pale shape slid toward him silently and sniffed at his furs. Hello, ghost.Jon Snow moved enveloping(prenominal). He looked larger and heavier in his layers of fur and leather, the hood of his cloak pulled down over his face. Lannister, he said, yanking loose the scarf to uncover his mouth. This is the last place I would have expected to see you. He carried a heavy spear tipped in iron, taller than he was, and a sword hung at his side in a leather sheath. Across his chest was a gleaming black warhorn, banded with silver. This is the last place I would have expected to be see n, Tyrion admitted. I was captured by a whim. If I touch Ghost, will he chew my hand off?Not with me here, Jon promised.Tyrion scratched the white wolf behind the ears. The red eyes watched him impassively. The beast came up as high as his chest now. other year, and Tyrion had the gloomy feeling hed be looking up at him. What are you doing up here tonight? he asked. Besides freezing your manhood off . . . I have drawn night guard, Jon said. Again. Ser Alliser has kindly arranged for the watch commander to take a special take in me. He seems to think that if they keep me awake half the night, Ill fall asleep during morning drill. So far I have disappointed him.Tyrion grinned. And has Ghost learned to juggle yet?No, said Jon, smiling, but Grenn held his own against Halder this morning, and Pyp is no longer dropping his sword quite so often as he did.Pyp?Pypar is his real name. The small boy with the large ears. He saw me working with Grenn and asked for help. Thorne had never even s hown him the proper way to grip a sword. He sour to look north. I have a mile of Wall to guard. Will you walk with me?If you walk slowly, Tyrion said. The watch commander tells me I must walk, to keep my blood from freezing, but he never said how fast. They walked, with Ghost pacing along beside Jon like a white shadow. I leave on the morrow, Tyrion said.I know. Jon sounded fishily sad.I plan to stop at Winterfell on the way south. If there is any message that you would like me to deliver . . . Tell Robb that Im going to command the Nights Watch and keep him safe, so he might as well take up needlework with the girls and have Mikken melt down his sword for horseshoes.Your brother is bigger than me, Tyrion said with a laugh. I decline to deliver any message that might get me killed.Rickon will ask when Im coming home. Try to explain where Ive gone, if you can. Tell him he can have all my things while Im away, hell like that.People seemed to be communicate a great deal of him today, T yrion Lannister thought. You could move all this in a letter, you know.Rickon cant read yet. Bran . . . He stopped suddenly. I dont know what message to send to Bran. Help him, Tyrion. What help could I give him? I am no maester, to ease his pain. I have no spells to give him back his legs. You gave me help when I needed it, Jon Snow said.I gave you nothing, Tyrion said. Words. Then give your words to Bran too.Youre asking a lame man to teach a cripple how to dance, Tyrion said. However sincere the lesson, the result is likely to be grotesque. Still, I know what it is to love a brother, Lord Snow. I will give Bran whatever small help is in my power.Thank you, my lord of Lannister. He pulled off his glove and offered his bare hand. Friend.Tyrion found himself oddly touched. Most of my kin are bastards, he said with a wry smile, but youre the first Ive had to friend. He pulled a glove off with his teething and clasped Snow by the hand, flesh against flesh. The boys grip was firm and s trong. When he had donned his glove again, Jon Snow turned abruptly and walked to the low, icy northern parapet. Beyond him the Wall fell away sharply beyond him there was only the darkness and the wild. Tyrion followed him, and side by side they stood upon the edge of the world. The Nights Watch permitted the forest to come no closer than half a mile of the north face of the Wall. The thickets of ironwood and sentinel and oak that had once grown there had been harvested centuries ago, to create a broad whack of open ground through which no enemy could hope to pass unseen. Tyrion had heard that elsewhere along the Wall, between the three fortresses, the wildwood had come creeping back over the decades, that there were places where grey-green sentinels and pale white weirwoods had taken root in the shadow of the Wall itself, but Castle Black had a prodigious inclination for firewood, and here the forest was still kept at bay by the axes of the black brothers. It was never far, though. From up here Tyrion could see it, the dark trees looming beyond the stretch of open ground, like a second wall built parallel to the first, a wall of night. Few axes had ever swung in that black wood, where even the moonlight could not penetrate the ancient tangle of root and thorn and grasping limb. Out there the trees grew huge, and the rangers said they seemed to brood and knew not men. It was small wonder the Nights Watch named it the haunted forest. As he stood there and looked at all that darkness with no fires burning anywhere, with the wind blowing and the cold like a spear in his guts, Tyrion Lannister felt as though he could almost believe the talk of the Others, the enemy in the night. His jokes of grumkins and snarks no longer seemed quite so droll. My uncle is out there, Jon Snow said softly, leaning on his spear as he stared off into the darkness. The first night they sent me up here, I thought, Uncle Benjen will ride back tonight, and Ill see him first and blow the hor n. He never came, though. Not that night and not any night.Give him time, Tyrion said.Far off to the north, a wolf began to howl. Another voice picked up the call, then another. Ghost cocked his head and listened. If he doesnt come back, Jon Snow promised, Ghost and I will go find him. He put his hand on the direwolfs head.I believe you, Tyrion said, but what he thought was, And who will go find you? He shivered.

Obama Immigration Reform Essay

Currently, 11 million prohibited immigrants inhabit the United States. This exit go out abide to augment without proper regulation of these aliens. Ever since his first inauguration, it has been P house physician Barack Obamas mission to improve the Statess mediocre in-migration arranging. Since Obamas reelection for his aid term, he has constantly stressed the fact that the new ideas for immigration reform be on the top of his list. Not only will these new reclaims incite two the legal and illegal immigrants, and American citizens, scarce also they will advantage the US economy. It has been a controversial argument whether Obamas reform ideas will either positively or negatively affect the US economy, and according to the two-party group of democrats and republicans, it is agreed that the positives greatly outweigh the negatives. After the bipartisan meeting on January 28th, 2013, in which both parties principles were announced for comprehensive immigration reform (CNN Political Unit, CNN. com), Obama presented a speech on January 29th, 2013, which consisted of numerous solutions to the troubled immigration administration presently used in the United States. This speech not only contained these ideas, but also his plan of action to pursue them during his next intravenous feeding years in office. Obama proved to America that he would attempt to fulfill these reforms as soon as possible by saying, It is time to fix the administration that has been broken for way too long, (CNN Political Unit, CNN. com). The first, and arguably the most imperative, immigrant reform plan is to strengthen the US-Mexico borders security, strictly correlating with illegal immigrant crossings.Since Obama has been in office, the number of illegal crossings has shrunk down to about 80% from their peak in 2000 (CNN Political Unit, CNN. com). Some specific methods that are considered being used to strengthen the US-Mexico border are increase protection and number of border patrol agents, add 350 miles of fencing, add 290 miles of vehicle barriers, invest in more than cameras and radar towers, and finally, end the Catch & carrier bag Policy (USA Immigration Reform, USAimmigrationreform. org). Secondly, Obama desires to increase the enforcement efforts on illegal immigrant criminals who endanger the unpolisheds communities.Thankfully, with Obama in office, the deportation of undocumented criminals is at its highest level than it has ever been out front (CNN Political Unit, CNN. com). The third angle for this project is to reinforce the already-formed DREAM Act, which stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors. The main purpose of this addition to the bill of reforms is so the minor league that travelled with their parents or guardians over the border (in this case, they are not responsible for being an illegal alien) are ensured opportunity, safety, and equal rights (Zuckerman-Bernstein, policymic. om). Providing conditional perm anent residency to original illegal minors of good moral character who graduate from high schools in the United States is the platform of this act (CNN Political Unit, CNN. com). The fourth contribution in Obamas speech discussed worksite enforcement. It is strongly suggested that we follow through a new national system that enables businesses to rapidly and accurately verify ones employment status, and even up more emphasized, heighten and ramp up the penalties deserved by the businesses that still hire lawlessly (CNN Political Unit, CNN. om). Actions to be accounted for in this effort are talk over the number of documents accepted to verify identity and work eligibility, ensuring that all workers must form legal status in the United States, increasing the fines and consequences for those continually hiring illegal workers, and lastly, to surge investigation of these employers (USA Immigration Reform, USAimmigrationreform. org). This topic is a bit more accentuated because the employment of illegal workers generates an unbalanced and unfair workplace for American citizens. The companies that hire illegally build a battlefield for companies that do proceed to follow the law and pay decent wages, causing those of which to suffer. Not only are these loyal companies and businesses affected, but also is a majority of general working Americans. Their wages and working conditions are threatened, but Obama demands to protect each workers rights and clarifies this motion by stating, We will make sure that every worker and business in America is playing the same set of rules, (CNN Political Unit, CNN. com). The fifth input could hold the most considerable amount of influence on illegal immigrants currently living in America, and for those who wish to come to America legally but alas fork over a hard time doing so. Obamas idea of laying out a road to citizenship has caught the eyes and ears of many. This pathway consists of various forms of tests and agreements th at attain to both present illegal immigrants and legal ones wishing to move, such as a background check, paying taxes, learning English, paying a penalty upon illegal ledger entry and getting in back of the line behind the people who have waited to arrive legally (illegals only).Obama claims this is only fair (CNN Political Unit, CNN. com). There will be a revised naturalization test, with a focus on American democracy, US history, and what is expected of a US citizen. Also, a rise of immigrant coach prepare will help applicants through the immigration process. Finally, its planned to enhance the development of web-based learning tools to increase English language skills (USA Immigration Reform, USAimmigrationreform. org).Congress stresses that this pathway to citizenship is mainly focused on the 11 million undocumented aliens in America, but it is equally vital to deal with future immigrants, as well, or the country may find itself housing more illegals and not progressing to a b etter America (Fox News, The Associated Press, foxnews. com). Lastly, Obamas final aspiration is to break our old fashioned system and bring it to the 21st century. The presidents opinion about visa card laws was that they are outdated and make no sense, (Fox News, The Associated Press, foxnews. com).He hopes to join family members with those who have come to earn a living already and to avoid the prolonged wait of future immigrants. Having to wait years before being able to stake ones family to America is absurd to the President and surely to a majority of others (CNN Political Unit, CNN. com). These plans, ideas, and desires for a higher quality national immigration system will be assorted into a bill. Witnesses largely appealed to congress disposition to pass the bill because not only will this bill ameliorate the lives of immigrants and their families, but also the US economy (Fox News, The Associated Press, foxnews. om).Correspondingly, there is a plethora of reasons why a sub stantial immigration reform would positively impact the US economy. To begin, immigrants get off businesses. The Small Business Administration says immigrants are 30% more believably to start a business compared to a native, and 18% of small business owners at present are immigrants (Gray, Furman, thewhitehouse. gov). In addition, this reform would create an annual increase of 0. 8% points to the economic bring upth rate, presently stuck at a frustrating 2% (CBN News, CBN. com). special boosts to the economic growth could potentially come from rising wages for newly legalized workers and higher productivity levels from the arrival of new, highly-skilled workers from abroad (Krudy, NBCnews. com). To even further express the benefit of immigration reform, just in 2008, the Congressional Budget Office projected an acquired $48 billion in revenue from 2008-2017, simply caused by a more efficient, modernized national immigration system (Krudy, NBCnews. com). Continuing on from the po int above, immigrant-owned businesses create jobs for Americans. The Fiscal Policy Institute stated that small businesses owned by immigrants employed about 4. 7 million people in 2007. These businesses generated over $776 billion annually. With this statistic, it only makes sense to assume that this ratio will continually grow in the future since more businesses will be started. Also, the Center of American Progress affirmed that comprehensive immigration reform would create jobs 900,000 people got jobs indoors 3 years from the increase of immigrant consumer spending (Gray, Furman, thewhitehouse. ov). Yes, immigrants will aid the US in creating jobs for its native citizens, but it is also true that immigrants are more likely to create their own jobs as well. The Department of Labor claimed that 7. 5% of foreign born people in the United States are self-employed, while only 6. 6% of native born are self-employed (Gray, Furman, thewhitehouse. gov). Immigrants are also a great contri butor to the economy because they have and probably will continue to create cutting-edge technology and companies.Big businesses like Google, Yahoo, Intel and eBay were all produced with the help of immigrants, and 25% of public US companies were started by them (Gray, Furman, thewhitehouse. gov). Alone, these booming businesses create an influx of earnings for the American economy. The earnings developed from these businesses wouldnt reach their full potential without the help of immigrants. Between 1990 and 2004, an accession of immigration correlated with increased earnings of about 0. 7% annually, recorded from studies at University of California (Gray, Furman, thewhitehouse. ov).Oddly enough, it is proven that immigrants earn greater degrees than non-immigrants. Surprisingly, with all of Americas exceptional education programs, only 16% of the resident population holds a bachelors degree. Immigrants represent 33% of Americas engineers, 27% of mathematicians, statisticians, and computer scientists, and 34% of physical scientists (Gray, Furman, thewhitehouse. gov). Another reason to implement this bill immediately is because reform legislation would reduce the deficit. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says that if the 2010 version of the DREAM Act was used, the federal deficit would be abated $2. 2 trillion over a course of 10 years because of accumulated tax revenues (Gray, Furman, thewhitehouse. gov). The consensus among economists said the new reform would maximize housing demand, encourage entrepreneurship, and turn out tax revenues, which in total would sufficiently aid the budget deficit (CBN News, CBNnews. com). So basically, the consensus among economists has determined immigration reform as a clams benefit.Economist Giovanni Peri plans to utilize a cap-and-trade visa system, which would induce a profit of $1. 2 billion a year (Krudy, NBCnews. com). Finally, immigration reform would increase Americas gross domestic product. The nonpartis an Congressional Budget Office asserted that even under low investment assumptions, immigration reform would raise the GDP by 0. 8%-1. 3% from 2012-2016 (Gray, Furman, thewhitehouse. gov). As one can see, President Barack Obama has put forth a much needed effort in the mission to create a noteworthy national immigration system. With all of these fair and effective plans and ideas, not one foreigner should have to think double about becoming an American citizen, considering it is for the benefit of themselves, their family, the United States and its economy. The National Council of La Raza, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and the outside(a) Secretary of the Service Employees International Union, all of these tied in with immigration policies, issued a joint statement saying The time to act is now, (Zuckerman-Bernstein, policymic. com).

Blacks in the Revolutionary War

Running Head Blacks in the Revolutionary War1 Blacks in the Revolutionary War African the Statesn Studies Latasha Gating September 20, 2012 LaChanda K. Clemons Blacks in the Revolutionary War2 Looking back at the history of the United States, it is evident that the Revolutionary War impacted the country a abundant direct. It was the first fight fought with slaves thanks to Lord Dunmores controversial proclamation. Historian Benjamin Quarles stated The Negros role in the Revolutionary War can be best understood by realizing his major loyalty was not to a place nor to a people but to a principle. There were pitch-dark loyalists, black sailors, black patriots and black regiments who fought and died in the name of Independence. It has been estimated that over 5,000 African Americans served as soldiers for the Continental army and more than 20,000 fought for the British cause. Slavery in Colonial America is noted to have begun in 1619 with the arrival of 20 African slaves on the Dutch ship named Man-of-war. The slaves made up over half the population in the colonies although they were seen more so as property instead of people. In 1776, there were about 500,000 African American men, women and children slaves.Everyone had a reason for taking part in the war. There were factors that motivated the blacks to take part in such a battle as well. The text mentions that when it came to fighting between the Patriots on one spot and their Loyalist American allies on the other, African Americans joined the side that offered freedom. Having that choice of raiseing freedom in exchange for serving in the military was therefore motivation. Other motives for blacks were the Blacks in the Revolutionary War3 desire for adventure, belief in the justice and the goals of the revolution and the possibility of receiving a bounty. The Continental navy and The Royal Navy write blacks into the navy because of the manpower shortages at sea. Some blacks had been captured from the royal n avy and used by the Patriots on their vessels. They also served as seamen on British vessel. Slaves and free slaves served as seaman. Because so many Patriot leaders resisted employing black troops, by mid-1775, the British had taken the initiative in recruiting African Americans. Revolutionary leaders feared using blacks in the arm forces. They were afraid that the slaves who were armed would uprise against them.In May 1775 the Massachusetts Committee of Safety put a stop to enlisting slaves in the armies of the colony. However, this did not follow out to the blacks who were already serving in the army. 1775-1783 the navy recruits freed black slaves and runaway slaves. Lord Dunmore, born John Murray, was the last Royal Governor of Virginia. Because he was short of men, Dunmore issued a proclamation stating that all able bodied men to assist him in the defense of the colony, including the slaves of rebels. He promised freedom to the blacks who served. After doing so in a month he had 800 soldiers. The purpose of his Proclamation was to declare martial law and to encourage slaves of rebels in Virginia to leave their masters and support the loyalist cause All apprenticed servants, Negroes, or othersfree that are able Blacks in the Revolutionary War4 and willing to bear arms Such an act outrage Virginians. Those that took Dunmore up on his discourse range between 800 and 2,000. The Virginia Congress replied to his Proclamation with the Dunmores wasnt as successful as his plan out, the number of his soldiers decreased due to smallpox outbreaks.Dunmores Proclamation was the first mass emancipation of slaves in American history. After the war ended, over 5,000 blacks left for Jamaica or St. Augustine because they were the property of loyalist that they would never gain their freedom from slavery. By 1786, many were back in bondage. There were those who were Patriots slaves but sided with the British were promised their freedom and was granted such. Many black pat riots found that the post war military held no rewards for them. So many men served in the armed forces which meant that their wives were left behind and had to take on their husband roles.Their lives changed a great deal during the Revolutionary War. The women, who could, serve the Colonial military forces and interacted with the male soldiers in camp. They were usually the wives and daughters of the male soldiers. The cooked, did laundry and cared for those that were sick. There also some who fought in the military battles Margaret Cochran Corbin and captain Molly. Molloys husband had taught her how to load and fire cannons. Black women, many of whom were slaves, served both Americans and the British in the capacity of nurses, laundresses and cooks.Blacks in the Revolutionary War5 Many African American soldiers fought and died for the sake of the Revolutionary War. The war ended in 1783, slavery was dying in the North and declining in Chesapeake. What was truly the purpose of Bla cks fighting if they did not describe freedom at the end of the war? Were the lives lost beneficially to the slaves or was it just a gimmick to get blacks to stand in stops where whiten soldiers have already died in. Deviations of Marxism

The problem of a mans scotch and political freedom has been widely discussed by specialists end-to-end centuries. Chomsky (1987), Bakunin (1934), Rousseau (1960), Humbold (in Botting 1973) have all questi whizzd the issue whether a man can ever be free in the society. The theory of Marxism can be regarded as a synthesis and conclusion of classical political economy, small-armicularly of utopian fondist writers from which Marx borrowed legion(predicate) ideas. The teaching of Marx is all-powerful because it is true.It is complete and symmetrical, offering an integrated view of the world, discordant with every superstition, with any reactionism, or with any defense of bourgeois oppression. (Eastman, Marx 1959, p. xxi). The problem of freeing man from the curse of economic developing and political and tender incarceration in Marxs works has been discussed by Highs (2004), Kozyn (1987), Sayer (1991), Suny (1993), and Wood (1997). As the sources argue, correspond to the opinion of Marx, this problem can be solved, but nevertheless after some kinds take place in the society.Capitalism is ordain to fail and be replaced by heartyism which can put an end to contradiction between two social classes- bourgeoisie and the working class. Opposite to the system of capitalism, socialism was going away to be based on the principles extremistly distinct from the principles of capitalist society, and thus end economic ontogenesis. According to Marx, nation could become free if they were free economically, and thus the end of economic exploitation was going to determine the freedom for people. In The Criticism of the Gotha Program Marx devotes study attention to the analysis of possession and the problem of workers estrangement of the results of their work as the major feature of exploitation Within the cooperative society, based upon the common ownership of the means of production, the producers do not exchange their products the labor of the individual becomes , no longer in a roundabout way, but directly, a component part of the total labor. (Eastman, Marx, 1959, p. 5).According to Marx, the exploitation of workers provided on all levels of production, their estrangement from the results of work all were the reasons of the inevitable changes in the future. The fact that surplus value was obtained by the capitalist was excessively one of the arguments for the future change in the structure. The class of workers realized that the results of their work were taken by the capitalist even though they were the ones who actually created the value. Therefore, they were eventually destined to struggle for their economic freedom, which would in addition lead to their social and political freedom. The dialectics argues that contradictions are the driving force of progress. Once contradictions appear in just about system, the system result need to undergo many changes and develop until the new level in which the synthesis of new qualities will be finally reached. Therefore, as it was correctly observe by Marx, the phase of capitalism could not be exclusively over- it would just develop until its new phase socialism and the most positive features of both systems would be present in the final synthesis of the two systems.People would reach the freedom only after the final stage of evolution, because earlier stages would still contain some features from the earlier system. Marx argues that communist society still bears, in every respect, economic, moral and intellectual, the birthmarks of the old society from whose womb it is issuing (Eastman, Marx, 1959, p. 5). Therefore, it is impossible to conclude that communism but frees people from economic exploitation and political and social enslavement. Communism is not a completely new system and has connection with the previous system of capitalism. It interacts with it in some ways but at the same time it has many new features which are beneficial for the working class and libe rates people in many aspects of life. In The Poverty of Philosophy Marx argues that eventually, communism is going to give political freedom to people. The working class will substitute, in the course of its development, for the old order of battle of civil society, an association which will exclude classes and their antagonism, and there will no longer be political power. (Eastman, Marx, 1959, p.2). The author also states that in the new collectivised society, all of the assets will be expropriated from the capitalists and thus they will not be able to obtain the benefits of the surplus value anymore. Therefore, economic exploitation will be finally brought to an end. Another feature of socialism is the equality of people, when they are able to work according to their abilities for themselves and the state they live in. The socialist society is not split into classes because it regards people equal in all the ways.Marx mentioned that unfortunately, all of the major developments needed to happen not as the result of evolution but as the results of struggles and revolutions because they were the only ways of destruction of the old system. Marx did not deny the role of evolution in the process of freeing people but he had very radical views and thus regarded revolution as the best tool of speeding up the evolution process which was going to lead to the long-waited changes in any case. As the author stated, the final end to capitalism could be put and the new socialist society could be established only with the help of arms.A remarkable feature of Marxs theory of capitalism development and evolution into socialism is that he does not share the opinions of utopian writers on this issue. Many utopian writers considered that social changes could be originated by the government of the country or by a class of educated capitalists. Marx was completely against these theories because he was confident that the former capitalists and members of government were unable to operate any changes into the countrys social structure. In order to form the new society, the new principles needed to be established and those people who belonged to the rival class of the workers were unable to bring any of the mentioned changes. It is also necessary to investigate the problem of freeing man from the curse of economic exploitation and political and social enslavement in Soviet Union. As the experience of the country shows, application of Marxism theory in Soviet Union completely failed to achieve its goals. As it was mentioned by Geoffrey (1997), Grigor (1993), Khazanov (1992), Lieven (1998), Kon (1993), one of the major mistakes made in Soviet Union was connected with Russian exceptionalism. As Grigor (1993) states, Soviet Union applied the concept of Marxist nationless society in a way completely different from its original meaning. Instead of freeing citizens of the country as Marxism stated, Soviet leaders oppressed all of the nations except Russians. Russia was the major center of all activities going in the country.Soviet Union was a very peculiar structure because it united a large number of nations which were very different in many ways. nearly of the nations included in the country were quite close to one another (Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine), while other republics in the Soviet Union structure were very different by their cultures. For example, Eastern republics, like Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan belonged to Muslim countries, and had very different traditions from Russians, but Russian nation forced all of them to act according to the traditions of the dominant nation. This was one of the major reasons of the empires failure in the following years. Sovietology paid removed too little attention for far too long to the non-Russian peoples, to the extrapolitical social environment, and to the particular contexts, contingencies, and conjunctures of the Soviet past. (Grigor, 1993 3) According to Marxists, all the nation s within the Soviet Union had to be completely alike and without any differences between them. Soviet leaders took the features of the Russian nation as the basic features. Therefore, all other nations had to adapt to the new culture which was not very familiar to them. The nationless society in reality glum out a Russian society with total dominance of the Russian nation in all the ways. All the nations other than Russians were oppressed greatly. They were all considered a step disgrace in the society ladder due to their origin, and did not have any political freedom. Policy of the country was in many ways channeled to the development of Russia and its cities. The largest sums from the budget were assigned to the development of Russia. While Russias economy was booming, particularly the economy of Moscow, all other economies were at a much lower level of development.Besides exceptionalism, there were many other problems with application of Marxist theory in Soviet Union. For examp le, Soviet leaders did their best to apply the principle according to which every person was required to contribute to the wealth of the country at his best and would get services from the state in the maximum amount. Instead, it was easy to stigmatise that leaders of the communist party got all of the benefits from the state while working people got only the minimum. As Lieven (1998) states, the reality of Soviet Union was very far from giving any freedom to its citizens.During capitalism workers were oppressed greatly and did not have a chance to satisfy all of their needs. The situation did not change much when Soviet leaders brought communism to the country because the oppression remained the same it just came not from capitalists but from communist leaders. Communist leaders in Vietnam also failed to implement principles of Marxism in the country. Similar to Lenins Soviet Union, Ho Chi Minhs Vietnam failed to liberate people from economic exploitation and did not give them soc ial and political freedom. According to Anh (1995, p.126), one of the major reasons of communisms failure in Vietnam is lack of background for it in the country. Marxism required the struggle between classes as the basis of the future revolution. In rural Vietnam, there were no rival classes similar to industrial Britain or Russia. The liberation of people in Vietnam could not be solely based on Marxs principles due to the radical differences between the British society which Marxism based his theory on and the Vietnamese society. There was no working class in Vietnam looking for liberation from capitalist exploitation. The major figure in Vietnamese society was a peasant fighting against the exploitation by foreigners oppressors. At the centre of Vietnamese history, stands the peasant, tenacious and heroic defender of the land inherited from the ancestors against the foreign invaders, but recurrently rising up against the know from within in an endless rebellion. (Le Vietnam trad itionnel. Quelques etapes historiques, 1971, p. 170). Communism in Vietnam was supposed to serve the interests of peasants in their fight against French oppressors. The highly destructive system of economic exploitation installed by the colonial regime gave birth to new social forces, while aggravating the situation of the rural masses. (Institute of Historical Studies, Vietnamese peasantry and rural society in the modern period, 1990, p. 35). Despite the attempts of application of Marxs theory in Vietnam, it was destined to fail because Vietnam was eventually liberated from oppressors, and any basis for the struggle between antagonist classes disappeared. In conclusion, it is necessary to mark that in its pure version, Marxism provides an answer to the question of how to liberate people from economic, political and social oppression. Liberation of people from economic exploitation comes runner and as long as it is achieved, political and social freedom can also be targeted. However , the attempts of the application of Marxism in Soviet Union and Vietnam have showed that peoples freedom cannot be achieved in real life due to fatal mistakes made by communist leaders in the application of Marxism.

Technology and Communication

We fill out that communication is important in e actually helping of our lives and technology is forever changing the different shipway we be able to communicate. Beca engage technology is continuously being advanced the way people communicate in the deplorable umpire dust must evolve to detainment up with the current trends. It is important that we keep up with the changing technology in regards to communication because burdenive communication is the direct result of a successful probe. The communication capabilities of specialized informationrmation bases within the criminal justice system pass been modify in a huge way by technology. Some of the current technologies used in the criminal justice system today argon mobile data terminals, automated reproduce identification system (AFIS), live scan, facial mention, and iris scan. The two modern technologies that will be discussed ar the automated fingerprint identification system and facial credit rating. The positive and contradict effects of AFIS and facial recognition will confusablely be discussed. Fingerprints and facial characteristics get down been used by the criminal justice system to indentify criminals for some(prenominal)(prenominal) years. The figure of speechs imbed on a persons fingers and unique features found on their face book several distinguishing characteristics that separate them from the rest of society. These two systems, though effective have been known to take hours or eve days to come up with results. Because term is so valuable to the criminal justice system these resemblances want to be d hotshot expeditiously because in many cases the epoch it has taken to react a rectify of fingerprints to a single person has been the difference between life and death for the accused.Modern technology has helped in a huge way to speed up this comparison process and has resulted in the setting secrete of wrongly accused persons and the locking away of the guilty party. Lets break these two systems galvanic pile starting with AFIS. AFIS is basically a database where mass amounts of fingerprint images have been stored after being cool from several different sources. There are two different types of sources, known and unknown. Known sources are fingerprints that have been collected from law offenders, military personnel, police officers, banks, and more. These fingerprints are normally collected when a person is hired by a company or agency that requires a background check as a part of the hiring process. The most common unknown source is those prints collected at a crime scene to be compared with known samples, too known as latent prints. Each set of fingerprints have their own pellucid patterns which are determined by a technician that enters them into the database. Each fingerprint image is filed based on its pattern type. (Ridges and Furrows. 2004. Par. ) By doing this it speeds up the process because it helps to eliminate all the prints tha t do not have a similar pattern type in comparison to the sample. Once the matches are made using the database they are reviewed one more time doing it manually and if a match is made those prints are used to identify individuals. It is very important that the matches found by the computer database are manually reviewed to ensure an exact match. facial recognition is also a very important aspect of communication in the criminal justice system.Facial recognition is known as the automatic recognition of a person using distinguishing traits. (Woodward et al. 2003. P. 1) Criminal justice professionals load photographs into computers and use these photographs to compare facial characteristics in an effort to reap potential matches. There are also those who have acquired the talent of creating sketches of suspects from a description given by a witness. These sketches are wherefore used in place of a photograph to obtain a positive match. The first tone of voice in this process is to capture the image either by camera or sketches. The second and three steps are to identify the face seen in the image and extract several features to create a template that can be used to make a match. The fourth step is to take the templates and make comparisons that will eventually lead to potential matches. There are several features found on and or around the face that make it possible to make a positive match. Some of these features are plausibly to change and others are not. Those features that are not likely to change are scars, moles, burns, and bone structure. There are also those features that could possibly change, one of which is tattoos. The only real similarity between the use of facial recognition and finger prints is that they must be manually compared to obtain the highest percentage of accuracy. Using both the database and the naked oculus will eliminate all chances of misreading the results in most cases. As beneficial as these newfangled technologies are there are al shipway positive and negatively charged effects to everything in life. The biggest positive effect that AFIS and Facial Recognition have on the criminal justice system is that they save large amounts of time during an investigation.Technicians are able to save large amounts of information to these databases so that when they process a search for comparison the computer does most of the work by eliminating all of the samples that are far from being the correct match and leaving only those samples that could possibly be the correct one. These databases also reduce the amount of human hallucination that can occur when trying to make a match. The job of operating these databases can be super stressful and technicians tend to get rushed as a result of this stress and overlook things that whitethorn have lead to the result they were looking for to begin with. Now lets go into the negative effects of these technologies. We know that as humans we are imperfect and anything created by humans has the potential to develop at any given time. It is also widely known that computers and servers use large amounts of electricity and have the potential to heat up very fast. If these data bases exceed the allowed temperature at any given time they will go down and this will result in the slowing down of any investigation that may be going on at the time.Another negative is the fact that these databases do not come with all of the information already installed. Uploading all of the samples takes a substantial amount of time and use of funds that could be used for the completion of other very important tasks. One last negative is the fact that these systems not only cost money to buy and operate, but people must be trained and paid to keep these databases up and running at all times so that put across does not stop in any form. Having well trained technicians is the most efficient way avoids having to transmit with any of these negative effects. If the decision had to b e made as to which one of these two databases contained the most dependableness it would have to be the automated fingerprint identification system. I say this because we know that there are other technologies out in the world that can be used to make those technologies used by criminal justice professionals less effective. The technology that is being referred to is plastic surgery. It is possible for a person to have their facial features altered in such a way that they cannot be identified as who they rattling are through the use of facial recognition databases. As for fingerprints, the only way that they can be altered is if a person were cut or burned so badly that scaring resulted. There have been several attempts by people over the years to erase their fingerprints, but these attempts have been unsuccessful. Fingerprinting has also been around a lot longer than facial recognition and has been proven to be more hi-fi than facial recognition. As we know technology is always c hanging as technicians find new ways to improve the systems that these databases run on. As technology improves the accuracy of AFIS, Facial Recognition, live scan, iris scan, and mobile data terminals will also improve. One thing to remember is that information must be manually uploaded into these databases so that they can be saved for current or future use. Another thing to remember is that when a potential match is made by using any of the before mentioned databases they must also be manually checked for accuracy. The reason for this is that the odds of two people having identical features is very low which room that results are not guaranteed to be perfect. The best way for agencies to ensure that these databases are used to their full potential is to continually train their technicians on the latest technology and keep the databases current.References Ridges and Furrows. Review of Blue Lagoon Essay

The wild blue yonder Lagoon Explores the Garden of Eden The Blue Lagoon is often ridculed as a fluff human race of adolescent nudity. However I believe The Blue Lagoon raises interesting questions about human sexuality. How did we die sex, and what about our sexuality is innate? The photograph presents the case of an innocent boy and girl from the Victorian Age, shipwrecked on a beautiful tropical island. They are soon without any adult guidance whatsover. As children, the 2 are inseparable, but the movie presents a plausible change in their relationship as they digress to go through the changes of puberty. They dresst understand the physical changes that are happening to their bodies. And they start to plow distant and secretive and angry with from each one other and they dont quite understand why. What they dont realize is that these changes are part of the process of moving apart and developing a adjourn sexual indentity from each other. Only after we see the steps of thi s transformation to sexual maturity entire do we see they are ready to discover humans oldest instinct in each other, which comes naturally to them in time. They then go on to discover the mysteries of parenthood and the psychological changes that come with that.former(a) themes such as religion and law are explored as well. What keeps this movie watchable is the cup of tea of the actors and the beauty of the island. The scenes on the lush tropical island and the bright blue ocean are beautifully shot and dreamlike. The natural beauty evokes a Garden of Eden. And this movie seems to try and explore the relationship that might have existed between rapture and Eve in the Garden of Eden, learning about love, sex, and children all on their own. And I think the movie gives it a pretty good shot. The Blue Lagoon is much deeper than people give it credit for.
